SPRUCE

Spruce shrubs are very popular in Utah today. They are often used as accent and foundation plants and can help create a mountainous feel in the home landscape.

Bird's Nest Spruce (Picea abies 'Niddiformis'): Bird's Nest Spruce gets its common name from its growth habit, which, after a number of years, can resemble a bird's nest. It is one of the most common dwarf spruce in Utah, and it grows very slowly and is often used as a border or foundation plant. Plant in full sun to part shade. (4'Hx4'W) Zone 4

Dwarf Norway Spruce (Picea abies 'Pumila'): Dwarf Norway Spruce is a common shrub in Utah landscapes. It is similar to Bird's Nest Spruce but has a more rounded shape. It also prefers to be planted in full sun to part shade. (4'Hx4'W) Zone 4

Globosa Spruce (Picea pungens 'Globosa'): Globosa Spruce has the same silver-blue needles that its bigger brother the Colorado Blue Spruce has. It is available in two forms. One grows low to the ground and looks like a nice, rounded shrub. The other form is grafted onto a trunk and has a lollypop form. The latter form is often used as a focal point in flowerbeds or other areas. Plant in full sun to part shade. (3'Hx4'W) Zone 4

Little Gem Norway Spruce (Picea abies 'Little Gem'): Little Gem Spruce is one of the smallest Spruce Shrubs commonly available. Its small size makes it great to use in rock gardens and as an accent plant in flowerbeds. Plant in full sun to part shade. (18"Hx18:W) Zone 4

SUMAC

Sumacs are a very common plant in Utah. Although they are included in the shrub section, many sumacs can grow into a small tree. Sumacs are very good when used in dry areas but can become invasive when they are given too much water.

Cut Leaf Sumac (Rhus typhina 'lacinata'): Cutleaf Sumac has very finely cut green leaves that turn brilliant red in the fall. This plant will thrive in almost any condition and prefers full sun. (12'Hx10'W) Zone 4

Fragrant Sumac (Rhus aromatica): Fragrant Sumac is a dense, rounded shrub that has red to purple fall color and is often used for erosion control. Plant in full sun to part shade. (4'Hx6'W) Zone 3

Gro-low Sumac (Rhus aromatica 'Gro-Low'): This is a smaller version of Fragrant Sumac, and it is used as a ground cover or for erosion control. It does best in full sun or part shade. (3'Hx6'W) Zone 4

Oak Brush Sumac (Rhus trilobata): This is a native shrub that can be used to naturalize in areas or as an informal hedge. Native Americans used the berries of this plant to make a lemonade-like drink. Foliage is red in the fall and is at its best when this plant is grown in full sun. (4'Hx4'W) Zone 4

Smooth Sumac (Rhus glabra): Smooth Sumac is a fast growing, large bush or small tree whose green leaves turn red in the fall. It is often planted in clumps to give a natural look and does best in full sun. (15'Hx15'W) Zone 4

TALL HEDGE BUCKTHORN

Tall Hedge Buckthorn (Rhamnus frangula 'Colomnaris'): Tall Hedge is a very narrow shrub that grows tall, and this lends its use to areas with limited space. It has dark green leaves that turn yellow in the fall. Plant in full sun to part shade. (12'Hx3'W) Zone 3

VIBURNUM

Viburnums are a very diverse group of shrubs. Some things that they have in common are that most of them have white flowers in the spring that are often very fragrant, and many of them also have very nice, red to purple fall foliage.
