SPRUCE
Spruce shrubs are very popular in Utah
today. They are often used as accent and foundation
plants and can help create a mountainous feel in the
home landscape.
Bird's Nest Spruce (Picea abies 'Niddiformis'):
Bird's Nest Spruce gets its common name from its
growth habit, which, after a number of years, can resemble
a bird's nest. It is one of the most common dwarf spruce
in Utah, and it grows very slowly and is often used
as a border or foundation plant. Plant in full sun to

Dwarf Norway Spruce (Picea abies 'Pumila'): Dwarf
Norway Spruce is a common shrub in Utah landscapes.
It is similar to Bird's Nest Spruce but has a more rounded

Globosa Spruce (Picea pungens 'Globosa'): Globosa
Spruce has the same silver-blue needles that its bigger
brother the Colorado Blue Spruce has. It is available
in two forms. One grows low to the ground and looks
like a nice, rounded shrub. The other form is grafted
onto a trunk and has a lollypop form. The latter form
is often used as a focal point in flowerbeds or other

Little Gem Norway Spruce (Picea abies 'Little Gem'):
Little Gem Spruce is one of the smallest Spruce Shrubs
commonly available. Its small size makes it great to
use in rock gardens and as an accent plant in flowerbeds.

SUMAC
Sumacs are a very common plant in Utah. Although they
are included in the shrub section, many sumacs can grow
into a small tree. Sumacs are very good when used in
dry areas but can become invasive when they are given
too much water.
Cut Leaf Sumac (Rhus typhina 'lacinata'): Cutleaf
Sumac has very finely cut green leaves that turn brilliant
red in the fall. This plant will thrive in almost any
condition and prefers full sun. (12'Hx10'W) Zone 4
Fragrant Sumac (Rhus aromatica): Fragrant Sumac
is a dense, rounded shrub that has red to purple fall
color and is often used for erosion control. Plant in

Gro-low Sumac (Rhus aromatica 'Gro-Low'): This
is a smaller version of Fragrant Sumac, and it is used
as a ground cover or for erosion control. It does best
in full sun or part shade. (3'Hx6'W) Zone 4
Oak Brush Sumac (Rhus trilobata): This is a native
shrub that can be used to naturalize in areas or as
an informal hedge. Native Americans used the berries
of this plant to make a lemonade-like drink. Foliage
is red in the fall and is at its best when this plant

Smooth Sumac (Rhus glabra): Smooth Sumac is a
fast growing, large bush or small tree whose green leaves
turn red in the fall. It is often planted in clumps
to give a natural look and does best in full sun. (15'Hx15'W)

Staghorn Sumac (Rhus typhina): Staghorn Sumac
is a very tough shrub that can be used in a variety
of situations. Its appearance is very similar to Smooth
Sumac but its fruit and new growth have small hairs

HEDGE BUCKTHORN
Tall Hedge Buckthorn (Rhamnus frangula 'Colomnaris'):
Tall Hedge is a very narrow shrub that grows tall, and
this lends its use to areas with limited space. It has
dark green leaves that turn yellow in the fall. Plant

VIBURNUM
Viburnums are a very diverse group of shrubs. Some
things that they have in common are that most of them
have white flowers in the spring that are often very
fragrant, and many of them also have very nice, red
to purple fall foliage.
Allegheny Viburnum (Viburnum x rhytidophylliodes):
This is a dense, partially evergreen shrub that is often
used as a large hedge or screen. It has white flowers
in the spring followed by red berries in the fall and
likes to be planted in full sun but tolerates dappled

Autumn Jazz Viburnum (Viburnum dentatum 'Autumn Jazz'):
Autumn Jazz Viburnum has white flowers in the spring
and it is often used in areas of wet or poorly drained

Burkwood Viburnum (Viburnum x burkwoodii): Burkwood
Viburnum is one of the most popular viburnum due to
its exceptionally fragrant, white flowers. It has dark
green leaves and is best used in full sun to part shade.

Chicago Lustre Viburnum (Viburnum dentatum 'Chicago
Lustre'): Chicago Lustre Viburnum is similar to Autumn
Jazz, but its leaves are a glossy green that go red

Compact American Cranberry Bush (Viburnum trilobum
'compactum'): Compact American Cranberry Bush is
almost indistinguishable from Dwarf European Cranberry
Bush. The major difference is that it is native to the

Dwarf European Cranberry Bush (Viburnum opolus 'nanum):
Dwarf European Cranberry Bush is a very nice, small
shrub. It has a very dense growth habit and a nice,
rounded shape. It can be used as a hedge or foundation
plant, and its foliage turns dark red in the fall. Plant

Eastern Snowball Bush (Viburnum opolus 'Sterile'):
Snowball Bush has been grown for many years in the Utah
landscape. It flowers very profusely in the spring and
is fruitless. Grow as a screen or as a specimen plant.
Its foliage turns red in the fall. Plant in full sun

European Cranberry Bush (Viburnum opolus): This
shrub is often used in naturalized areas. It has white
flowers in the spring and red berries in the fall. Plant

Korean Spice Viburnum (Viburnum carlesii): Korean
Spice Viburnum is not a very common shrub, but its use
is merited in the landscape. Its white flowers are very
fragrant, and the plant can be used as a foundation

Marie Doublefile Viburnum (Viburnum plicatum f. tomentosum
'Mariesii): Doublefile Viburnum is one of the most
beautiful viburnum. It has vertical branching that has
abundant white flowers in the spring and should be used

Mohican Viburnum (Viburnum lantana 'Mohican'):
Mohican Viburnum has dark green leaves that turn purple
in the fall and a very dense growth habit. It tolerates

Pink Dawn Viburnum (Viburnum x bodnantense): Pink
Dawn has fragrant white to pink flowers in early spring.
It is often used as a larger hedge plant or as a screen.
