LAUREL
The various laurels in this section are
all varieties of English Laurel, which is sometimes
known as Cherry Laurel. All varieties of English Laurel
are evergreen and, in Utah, need to be grown in full
to part shade.
Dwarf English Laurel (Prunus laurocerasus 'Nana'):
Dwarf English Laurel is often used as a hedge plant
in shady areas. It grows just slightly larger than Otto
Luyken and has larger leaves. Plant in full to part
shade. (4'Hx5'W) Zone 6
English Laurel (Prunus laurocerasus'): English Laurel
grows bigger than the other Cherry Laurels, but the
foliage is similar to Dwarf English Laurel and is also
very dense. English Laurel is good screen or hedge plant,
and needs to be planted in full to part shade. (12'Hx8'W)
Zone 3
Otto Luyken Laurel (Prunus laurocerasus 'Otto Luyken'):
This is the most popular Cherry Laurel. It has a nice,
rounded shape when fully grown and very dense foliage.
It is often used as a foundation plant and as an informal
hedge. Plant in full to part shade. (3'Hx4'W) Zone 6
Shipka Laurel (Prunus laurocerasus 'Schipkaensis):
Shipka Laurel is one of the most cold- hardy forms of
English Laurel available. Its leaf shape is intermediate
between English and Otto Luyken Laurel and needs to
be planted in full shade to part sun. (5'Hx8'W) Zone

LILAC
Common Lilac (Syringa vulgaris): Almost everyone
recognizes the fragrant spring flowers that lilacs produce.
Common Lilac has been planted for generations. Lilac
flowers come in a multitude of colors and last for long
periods of time when used in floral displays. Plant
in full sun to part shade. (10'Hx11'W) Zone 3
Dwarf Korean Lilac (Syringa meyeri 'palabin'):
Dwarf Korean Lilac has fragrant lavender colored flowers
in the spring and works well in areas where space is
limited due to its small size. This is an uncommon lilac
worth having in the home landscape. Plant in full sun
to part shade. (4'Hx4'W) Zone 3
Miss Kim Lilac (Syringa patula 'Miss Kim'): Miss
Kim Lilac is another lilac that works well where space
is at a premium. It has fragrant violet colored flowers
and is slightly larger than Dwarf Korean Lilac. It prefers
to be planted in full sun but tolerates some shade.

MOCK
ORANGE
Mock Orange (Philadelphus spp.): Mock Orange
is another shrub that has been used in the home landscape
for many generations. It has fragrant white single or
double flowers in the spring and can be used as a hedge
or as a single specimen. Plant in full sun to part shade.

NINEBARK
Dwarf Ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius
'nanus'): Dwarf Ninebark is a diminutive shrub that
can be used as a small hedge plant, foundation plant
or in rock gardens. It has white flowers in the spring
and has peeling bark that creates winter interest. Plant
in full sun to part shade. (5'Hx6'W) Zone 3
Dart's Gold Ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius 'Dart's
Gold'): This Ninebark has golden-yellow foliage
and white flowers in the spring. It is best to prune
this shrub immediately after flowering to maintain its
shape. This ninebark is extremely cold hardy, but do
not plant it on a south or other hot exposures. (10'Hx10'W)

Diablo Ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius 'Diablo'):
Diablo Ninebark has dark red foliage throughout the
growing season, and it also has nice, white flowers
in the spring. Prune after it finishes flowering to
maintain shape and vigor. Plant in full sun to part

PHOTINIA
Fraser's Photinia (Photinia x fraseri):
Fraser's Photinia is a very popular broadleaf evergreen
shrub. Its new growth emerges brilliant red and then
turns green. It takes pruning well, so it can be used
as a hedge or as a specimen plant, but it is wise to
temper excitement about this photinia because it is
not very cold hardy. It needs to be placed where it
can receive winter protection from the wind and sun.

PINE
Dwarf Mugo Pine (Pinus mugo 'pumilio'): Dwarf
Mugo Pine is the most popular coniferous shrub in Utah.
It has a nice, rounded shape when fully grown, and is
also very drought tolerant. It can be used in many different
areas of the landscape but prefers full sun to part
shade. It is also extremely cold hardy. (4'Hx4'W) Zone

Dwarf Scotch Pine (Pinus sylvestris 'glauca nana'):
Dwarf Scotch Pine is a very tough shrub that tolerates
dry soils and also has a very nice globe shape. It is
sold in two versions: the first grows closer to the
ground and looks like a standard shrub, the second is
grafted on a trunk and its looks are akin to a mushroom
or a sucker. Grow in full sun to part shade. (6'Hx6'W)

Slowmound Mugo Pine (Pinus mugo 'slowmound'):
Slowmound Mugo Pine is one of the smallest shrubs commonly
available. It grows very slowly and works well in rock
gardens and other confined spaces and prefers full sun
to part shade. (18"Hx18"W) Zone 2
POTENTILLA
Abbotswood Potentilla (Potentilla fruticosa 'Abbots'):
Abbotswood Potentilla has white flowers and makes a
good foundation plant. Plant in full sun to part shade.

Gold Drop Potentilla (P. fruticosa 'Gold Drop'):
Gold Drop Potentilla has the classic yellow Potentilla
flower, but it is shorter than most other forms of potentilla.

Goldfinger Potentilla (P. fruticosa 'Goldfinger'):
Goldfinger Potentilla is one of the most common forms
of potentilla available in nurseries. It has bright
yellow flowers and a nice rounded shape. Plant in full

Marion Red Robin Potentilla (P. fruticosa 'Marion
Red Robin'): This is a red flowered form of potentilla.
Its flower color is usually best in the spring and early
fall, and its foliage is dense. Plant in full sun to

Sunset Potentilla (P. fruticosa 'Sunset'): Sunset
Potentilla has orange flowers in the spring and yellow-orange
flowers in the summer. It has a nice mounding growth
habit, and it works well as a foundation plant. Plant
in full sun to part shade. (2'Hx2'W) Zone 3
PRIVET
Many different varieties of privet have been used in
the home landscape for generations as hedges or are
pruned into any number of shapes. Most privets need
regular pruning to keep them under control and to maintain
their shape. Evergreen privets, also known as Wax Ligustrums,
do not survive in Northern Utah but are often used in
the St. George area.
Amur River Privet (Ligustrum amurense 'Amur River'):
Amur River Privet is one of the most cold hardy types
of privet commonly sold. It has very dense foliage and
tolerates many varied soil conditions. Plant in full
sun to part shade. (12'Hx10'W) Zone 3
Cheyenne Privet (Ligustrum vulgare 'Cheyenne'):
Cheyenne Privet is very similar to Amur River Privet.
It has a very similar growth habit but is not as cold
hardy and has slightly darker leaves. Plant in full
sun to part shade. (10'Hx10'W) Zone 3
Golden Privet (Ligustrum x vicaryi): This is
the most common privet sold in Northern Utah. Its new
growth emerges bright yellow and when kept pruned will
stay yellow the entire summer. Golden Privet is semi-evergreen
and does best in full sun but does not do well in colder
areas of Utah. (8'Hx6'W) Zone 5-6
Lodense Privet (Ligustrum vulgare 'Lodense'):
Lodense Privet is a dwarf variety of privet and does
well as a small hedge or as a foundation plant. Plant
