The various laurels in this section are all varieties of English Laurel, which is sometimes known as Cherry Laurel. All varieties of English Laurel are evergreen and, in Utah, need to be grown in full to part shade.

Dwarf English Laurel (Prunus laurocerasus 'Nana'): Dwarf English Laurel is often used as a hedge plant in shady areas. It grows just slightly larger than Otto Luyken and has larger leaves. Plant in full to part shade. (4'Hx5'W) Zone 6
English Laurel (Prunus laurocerasus'): English Laurel grows bigger than the other Cherry Laurels, but the foliage is similar to Dwarf English Laurel and is also very dense. English Laurel is good screen or hedge plant, and needs to be planted in full to part shade. (12'Hx8'W) Zone 3

Otto Luyken Laurel (Prunus laurocerasus 'Otto Luyken'): This is the most popular Cherry Laurel. It has a nice, rounded shape when fully grown and very dense foliage. It is often used as a foundation plant and as an informal hedge. Plant in full to part shade. (3'Hx4'W) Zone 6

Shipka Laurel (Prunus laurocerasus 'Schipkaensis): Shipka Laurel is one of the most cold- hardy forms of English Laurel available. Its leaf shape is intermediate between English and Otto Luyken Laurel and needs to be planted in full shade to part sun. (5'Hx8'W) Zone 6

LILAC

Common Lilac (Syringa vulgaris): Almost everyone recognizes the fragrant spring flowers that lilacs produce. Common Lilac has been planted for generations. Lilac flowers come in a multitude of colors and last for long periods of time when used in floral displays. Plant in full sun to part shade. (10'Hx11'W) Zone 3

Dwarf Korean Lilac (Syringa meyeri 'palabin'): Dwarf Korean Lilac has fragrant lavender colored flowers in the spring and works well in areas where space is limited due to its small size. This is an uncommon lilac worth having in the home landscape. Plant in full sun to part shade. (4'Hx4'W) Zone 3

Miss Kim Lilac (Syringa patula 'Miss Kim'):
Miss Kim Lilac is another lilac that works well where space is at a premium. It has fragrant violet colored flowers and is slightly larger than Dwarf Korean Lilac. It prefers to be planted in full sun but tolerates some shade. (5'Hx5'W) Zone 3

Dart's Gold Ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius 'Dart's Gold'): This Ninebark has golden-yellow foliage and white flowers in the spring. PHOTINIA

Fraser's Photinia (Photinia x fraseri): Fraser's Photinia is a very popular broadleaf evergreen shrub. Its new growth emerges brilliant red and then turns green. It takes pruning well, so it can be used as a hedge or as a specimen plant, but it is wise to temper excitement about this photinia because it is not very cold hardy. It needs to be placed where it can receive winter protection from the wind and sun. (10'Hx10'W) Zone 7

PINE

Dwarf Mugo Pine (Pinus mugo 'pumilio'): Dwarf Mugo Pine is the most popular coniferous shrub in Utah. It has a nice, rounded shape when fully grown, and is also very drought tolerant.
