HEATHER
Heather (Erica cinerea): Heather is well known
in the British Isles where it grows wild, and in the
spring entire mountainsides can be covered with its
white, pink or purple flowers. Grow Heather in areas
that receive afternoon shade and in well-drained soil.

HIBISCUS
Hibiscus (Hibiscus moscheutos): This type of
hibiscus is famous for its dinner plate sized flowers
in late summer and early fall. It is actually a large
perennial that dies back to the ground after the first
hard frost of the year, and its most common flower color
is white, but red and pink are also sometimes available.
Common named varieties of this hibiscus include the
Disco Belle mix, Southern Belle, and Lady or Lord Baltimore.
Perennial hibiscus prefers full sun and will do well
on a south exposure. It is not hardy in colder parts

Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syraiacus): Rose of Sharon
is a very common in Utah. It blooms from July on until
first frost in the fall with white, red or purple flowers.
Use as a screen or a specimen plant. It prefers full

HOLLY
Blue Holly (Ilex x meserveae): There are several
forms of Blue Holly available to consumers. Some of
them include Blue Boy and Blue Girl, Blue Prince and
Blue Princess, and China Boy and China Girl. The main
difference in these varieties is their eventual size
when fully grown. If holly berries are desired, it is
important to plant both a male and female variety. In
Utah, Hollies prefer to be planted in partial to full

HYDRANGEA
Hydrangea, Assorted (Hydrangea macrophylla):
Hydrangea generally flower in late spring and flower
colors include white, blue and pink. Plant in partial
shade and keep the soil slightly moist. Hydrangeas are
sometimes slow to establish. (4'Hx4'W) Zone 5
Pink Elf Hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla 'Pink Elf'):
Pink Elf Hydrangea is a dwarf shrub and has bright pink
flowers. Plant in partial shade and keep the soil slightly

JUNIPER
Junipers are very common in the Utah landscape. There
are two general types of Juniper sold in nurseries:
columnar forms and shrub or groundcover forms. One thing
all junipers have in common is their drought tolerance.
Many of them, once established, will flourish on rainwater
alone, and, conversely, one of the easiest ways to kill
them is to give them too much water. They all prefer
full sun although they tolerate some shade.
Blue Chip Juniper (Juniperus horizontalis 'Blue
Chip'): Blue Chip Juniper is one of the most popular
groundcover junipers. It is very low growing and has
dense silvery-blue foliage. Plant in full sun to part

Blue Point Juniper (Juniperus chinensis 'Blue Point'):
Blue Point Juniper has a taller pyramidal shape. It
has a blue color and is often used as a screen plant
and a windbreak. Plant in full sun to part shade (12'Hx8'W)

Blue Rug Juniper (Juniperus horizontalis 'Wiltonii):
Blue Rug Juniper, also known as Wilton's Juniper, is
one of the lowest growing junipers available. It has
silvery-blue foliage and is often used in mass plantings.

Blue Star Juniper (Juniperus squamata 'Blue Star'):
Blue Star Juniper has fantastic blue color and a dense,
low mounding growth habit. It is often used in rock
gardens in borders and as a foundation plant. Plant

Broadmore Juniper (Juniperus sabina 'Broadmore'):
Broadmore Juniper is one of the best ground cover junipers.
It is very dense green foliage and is also used as a

Buffalo Juniper (Juniperus sabina 'Buffalo'):
Buffalo Juniper is a very popular groundcover juniper
and is an all-around tough shrub. It has green foliage
and is often used in mass plantings. Plant in full sun

Gold Coast Juniper (Juniperus chinensis 'aurea'):
Gold Coast Juniper is a very nice specimen or foundation
shrub. Its new growth emerges in spring with a gold
color, and it prefers to be grown in full sun. (3'Hx4'W)

Gray Gleam Juniper (Juniperus scopulorum 'Gray Gleam'):
Gray Gleam Juniper is a Utah native and is one of the
most popular upright junipers. It has a columnar growth
habit and is often used as a screen and as a specimen

Green Mound Juniper (Juniperus procumbens 'nana'):
Green Mound Juniper is sometimes used as a bonsai
plant but is more often used as a hedge and in mass

Hillspire Juniper (Juniperus virginiana 'Cupressifolia'):
Hillspire Juniper grows tall and remains narrow. It
is often used as a screen and a windbreak. Plant in

Hollywood Juniper (Juniperus chinensis 'Torulosa'):
Hollywood Juniper lives up to its name. Its growth
twists into interesting shapes and is often pruned to

Mint Julep Juniper (Juniperus chinensis 'Monlep'):
Dense mint green foliage makes this juniper a great
choice for a screen or hedge. It grows moderately fast
and has weeping branches. Plant in full sun to part

Moonglow Juniper (Juniperus scopulorum 'Moonglow'):
Moonglow Juniper has silvery-blue foliage and is also
native to Utah. It grows taller than other upright junipers

Old Gold Juniper (Juniperus x media 'Old Gold'):
This plant is very similar to Cold Coast Juniper; with
the major difference being that Old Gold Juniper holds
its golden color throughout the year. Plant in full

Prince of Whales Juniper (Juniperus horizontalis
'Prince of Whales'): This is another popular ground
cover juniper. Its foliage is dark green in the summer
and turns purple in the winter. Plant in full sun to

Sierra Spreader Juniper (Juniperus sabina 'Sierra
spreader'): Sierra Spreader Juniper is low growing
and has green foliage throughout the year. It is a popular
groundcover and has a moderate growth rate. Plant in

Sky Rocket Juniper (Juniperus scopulorum 'Sky Rocket'):
Skyrocket Juniper is the most popular upright juniper
and lives up to its name with its very narrow growth
habit. It is often planted on the edges of buildings
and driveways and needs to be wrapped in the winter
in areas of high snowfall. Plant in full sun to part

Spartan Juniper (Juniperus chinensis 'Spartan'):
This is a fast growing, columnar juniper that tolerates
heat and drought very well. It is often used as a screen
or windbreak and needs to be planted in full sun to

Spearmint Juniper (Juniperus chinensis 'Spearmint'):
Spearmint Juniper is one of the most popular upright
junipers. It has dense, dark green foliage and is often
used as a screen or wind break. Plant in full sun or

Tam Juniper (Juniperus sabina 'Tamariscafolia'):
Tam Juniper has been around for a long time. It is fast
growing and can be pruned into a hedge. Plant in full

Wichita Blue Juniper (Juniperus scopulorum 'Wichita
Blue'): Wichita Blue Juniper has a columnar growth
habit, silver-blue foliage, and is often used as a screen
