BOXWOOD
Boxwoods are one of the most commonly used shrubs in
the home landscape. They are most frequently used as
a hedge, and they can be pruned into almost any shape
imaginable. Although they can be planted in the sun,
do not place them on a south exposure or in other very
hot situations.
Green Beauty Boxwood (Buxus microphylla var. japonicus):
Green Beauty Boxwood, as with all other boxwood varieties,
makes a great hedge plant. It is a broadleaf evergreen
that holds a nice green color throughout the winter.
It tolerates sun but does not do well on a south or
other hot exposures. (5'Hx6'W) Zone 5
True Dwarf Boxwood (Buxus sempervirens var. suffruticosa):
This shrub, also known as English Boxwood, has a slightly
more refined appearance than other boxwoods and is commonly
used as a hedge in formal European gardens. It is also
evergreen but is not as cold hardy as the other varieties
of boxwood and requires more shade. (2'Hx2'W) Zone 5
Winter Gem Boxwood (Buxus microphylla var. koreana):
Winter Gem Boxwood is the most poplar boxwood in Utah.
It is evergreen and is more cold hardy than other boxwoods,
but the leaves may discolor slightly to an off green
in the winter. If this does happen, it regains its normal
colors in the spring. Winter Gem Boxwood will tolerate
sun but will not do well in very hot situations. (3'Hx3'W)

BUTTERFLY
BUSH
Butterfly Bush (Buddleia davidii): Butterfly Bush
is a great shrub for many reasons. As its name implies
it attracts butterflies, but it also blooms for much
of the summer and its flowers look and smell like lilacs.
Common flower colors include white, pink, blue, and
purple, and it is a very fast growing shrub that does
best when pruned back severely in the spring. Several
varieties are available. (7'Hx6'W) Zone 5
CISTENA
PLUM
Cistena Plum (Prunus x cistena): Cistena Plum
is a popular shrub in Utah landscapes. It has white
flowers in early spring and, after flowering, new leaves
emerge with a dark red color that remains the entire
growing season. It is often used as an informal hedge
or as a larger foundation plant. It prefers full sun
to part shade. (8'Hx6'W) Zone 3
CONTORTED
FILBERT
Contorted Filbert (Corylus avellana 'Contorta'):
Contorted Filbert is a good specimen plant that draws
attention to high impact areas. Its branches grow in
a distorted and twisting manner that creates an interesting
effect in all seasons of the year. Plant in full sun.

DEUTZIA

cover this mounding shrub in the spring. Its green foliage
turns deep purple in the fall. (2'Hx2'W) Zone 5
DOGWOOD
There are several varieties of dogwood used in the home
landscape. They all do well in wet soils but are also
surprisingly drought tolerant. Many dogwoods have red
fall foliage and also create winter interest with their
brilliant red or yellow stems. Dogwoods are fast growing
and sometimes need to be cut back to maintain their
shape and vigor.
Bud's Yellow Dogwood (C. alba 'Bud's Yellow'):
Bud's Yellow Dogwood is fast growing and has vivid yellow
branches. It is commonly used as a screen but can also
be used as a specimen shrub. It tolerates wet soils
and can be grown in full sun or part shade. (6'Hx6'W)
Zone 3
Isanti Dogwood (C. sericea 'Isanti'): Isanti
Dogwood is moderately sized and works well in smaller
yards. It grows quickly, tolerates wet soils and is
a Utah native. Grow in full sun to part shade. (6'Hx6'W)
Zone 3
Kelsey Dogwood (C. sericea 'Kelsey'): Kelsey Dogwood
is a true dwarf dogwood that when fully grown has a
nice globe shape. It does best in afternoon shade. (2'Hx2'W)
Zone 5
Red Osier Dogwood (C. sericea 'Bailey'): Red
Osier Dogwood is commonly seen along riverbanks in much
of Utah. It is a larger shrub, and for this reason makes
a very good, fast growing screen. It has dark red branches
and also grows well in wet soil. Grow in full sun to
part shade. (13'Hx8'W) Zone 3
Variegated Red Twig Dogwood (C. alba 'Elegantissima'):
Variegated Red Twig Dogwood is very popular among consumers,
because of its variegated green and white leaves. It
grows to a moderate size and works well in the modern
home landscape. Grow in full sun to part shade, but
not on a hot south exposure. (6'Hx6'W) Zone 3
Yellow Twig Dogwood (C. sericea 'Flaviramea'):
Yellow twig dogwood is very similar to Bud's yellow
but it grows two to three feet taller. (8'Hx6'W) Zone
