Little Giant Arborvitae (T. occidentalis 'Little
Giant): This shrub, when fully grown, has a nice,
rounded shape that makes it a good foundation plant

may require wrapping in the winter and prefers to be
planted in full sun to part sun. (4'Hx4'w) Zone 3
Golden Arborvitae (T. orientalis 'Westmont'):
This is a nice dwarf shrub that has golden foliage for

AZALEA
Azalea (Rhododendron spp.): During springtime
Azaleas are among the most beautiful flowering shrubs.
They come in a multitude of colors ranging from white
to red and purple and are commonly grown in the Pacific
Northwest and on east coast, but due to soil chemistry
differences, they can be a challenge to grow in Utah.
They do best in full to part shade, and need to be planted
under shade trees or on the north or east sides of buildings.
It is best to consult qualified nursery personnel before
planting Azaleas. (Sizes vary according to variety)
Zones 4 or 5
BARBERRY
There is a wide variety of barberry available today.
Most of them have dark red leaves, but there are also
several yellow and green forms available that coincidently
have excellent fall color. In addition to these other
forms, there are a few evergreen forms of barberry available.
Any evergreen barberry needs winter protection from
afternoon sun and drying winds. All barberries have
thorns.
Burgundy Carousel Barberry (Berberis thumbergii
'Bailtwo'): Burgundy Carousel Barberry has red leaves
for most of the summer but will revert to a green color
if planted in the shade. Because of its uniform spreading
habit this shrub works well as a hedge and in other
situations. Plant in full sun to part shade. (3'Hx4'W)
Zone 4
Crimson Pigmy Barberry (B. thumbergii 'Crimson Pigmy'):
Crimson Pigmy Barberry is the most popular red leaf
barberry due to its compact growth habit and dark red
color. It rarely needs pruning unless a more formal
look is desired and is also commonly used as a hedge
plant and in rock gardens. (2'Hx2'W) Zone 4
Gold Nugget Barberry (B. thumbergii 'Monlers'):
Gold Nugget Barberry is a very compact yellow leafed
variety that contrasts well with other green leafed
plants in a flower garden. It likes the sun but does
not do well on a hot south exposure. (2'Hx2'W) Zone
4
Kobold Barberry (B. thumbergii 'Kobold'): Kobold
Barberry is a green leaved variety that turns a brilliant
red or orange in the fall. It also stays very compact
and makes a nice foundation or hedge plant. Grow in
full sun to part shade. (2'Hx2'W) Zone 4
Rose Glow Barberry (B. thumbergii 'Rose Glow'):
Rose Glow Barberry is unique in that its new growth
is variegated pink and white that will eventually mature
to a dark red. It can be used as a specimen plant or
as a hedge. Plant in full sun to part shade. (5'Hx4'W)
Zone 4
Sparkler Barberry (B. thumbergii 'Sparkler'):
Sparkler Barberry has green leaves and a larger size
than most other barberries. It has a nice weeping habit
when it is fully-grown. It also has orange to red fall
foliage and plant in full sun to part shade. (5'Hx6'W)
Zone 4
William Penn Barberry (B. x gladwynensis): William
Penn Barberry is evergreen and its leaves are green
in the summer and then turn red in the winter. In Utah,
this barberry does best in afternoon shade, because
in the winter, leaf scorch can occur if planted in full
sun. One thing to note, this barberry has sharper spines
than most other barberries and also must not be planted
in colder areas of Utah. (3'Hx4'W) Zone 6
Yellow Leaf Japanese Barberry (B. thumbergii 'Aurea'):
As its name implies this barberry has yellow leaves.
It grows slightly larger than Gold Nugget Barberry and
does not like to be planted in very hot exposures. (3'Hx4'W)
Zone 4
BLUE
MIST SPIRAEA
Blue Mist Spiraea (Caryopteris x clandonensis):
Blue Mist Spiraea goes by many different names: a couple
of the more common names include Blue Beard and Blue
Mist Blue Beard. This is a very fast growing shrub that
has blue to purple flowers during the last half of the
summer and early fall. To promote profuse flowering,
it is best to cut the shrub almost to the ground in
late February or early March. Blue Mist Spiraea needs
full sun and lots of heat. (4'Hx4'W) Zone 5
BOG
ROSEMARY
Bog Rosemary (Andromeda polifolia): Bog Rosemary
is a broadleaf evergreen shrub that has white or pink
