Ponderosa
Pine
Pinus ponderosa
COMMON NAME: Ponderosa
Pine, Western Yellow Pine
DESCRIPTION:
Average size for this three needled pine in cultivation is approximately
25' wide and 50'-60' tall. The needles are between 6"
and 10" long. It can withstand temperatures down to -40 degrees
F.
NATIVE RANGE: Native
to much of the mountainous areas of the state.
CULTURE: Either
transplant balled and burlapped or containerized. It is an
easy pine tree to transplant. Ponderosa Pine will tolerate
alkaline soil and is very drought tollerant.
DISEASE AND INSECT:
Resistant to most pests and
diseases.
LANDSCAPE VALUE:
Ponderosa pine is not the most beautiful tree and also sheds its
needles freely. The tree is functional if a person is trying
to achieve a truly native landscape. A pine tree that has
very similar cultural requirements and a very similar shape is the
Austrian Pine. It has slightly shorter darker green needles
and does not tend to shed as many needles as Ponderosa Pine.
