NAME: Bristlecone Pine,
Foxtail Pine
DESCRIPTION:
Bristlecone pine is a five needled pine that has short very dark
green needles. It can reach 20'-40' tall and has a very contorted
almost tortured shape. The needles are often sprinkled with
small, white resin deposits.
NATIVE RANGE:
Dryer slopes of the Rocky Mountains from 7000-1100 feet.
CULTURE: Bristlecone
Pine prefers well drained or even rocky soil. It is very drought
tolerant and also easy to transplant. This pine is also very
slow growing.
DISEASE AND INSECTS: Can
be susceptible to iron chlorosis and root rot when over watered.
LANDSCAPE VALUE: Bristlecone
Pine can make a very good focal point in the landscape with its
unique look. It is ideal for the xeric landscape.
