COMMON
NAME: Big Tooth Maple,
Rocky Mountain Glow Maple (Schmidt introduction)
DESCRIPTION: Big
Tooth Maple will reach 30' high and 15'-20' wide when fully

NATIVE
RANGE: The tree is
native to almost all mountainous areas of the state, along foot
hills, and in canyons. It is the most common maple in the
state.
CULTURE: Big
Tooth Maple is a very adaptable, drought tolerant tree.
Although with no water the tree maintains a shrubby form.
Pruning is advisable to help maintain a nice form.
DISEASE AND INSECT:
Big Tooth Maple is disease
and insect resistant.
LANDSCAPE VALUE:
Big Tooth Maple is a beautiful tree. It is the best native
maple for landscape use. It's size makes it excellent for
use as a park strip tree or as a nice front lawn tree. It
also has excellent fall color ranging from light orange to brilliant
red. The Schmidt introduction 'Rocky Mountain Glow Maple'
was at one time grafted onto sugar maple root stock which made
it very susceptible to iron chlorosis. The Glow Maple's
fall color is no better than the native trees, but it is the one
usually available in commerce.
